Deano names Taylor as skipper

NEW Wrexham manager Dean Saunders has named “winner” Neil Taylor as his captain for tonight’s home clash with York City.

Saunders makes his Racecourse bow this evening for what the Dragons boss hopes will be a vision of the future.

A proud Welshman, Saunders has vowed to halt years of decline and only five days into the job has named teenager Taylor as team captain for tonight’s Blue Square Premier encounter.

Confirming that 19-year-old Taylor would lead out the team this evening, Saunders said: “Everything about him suggests to me that he wants to be a winner.”

It’s also surely no coincidence

that Taylor (right) – a Daily Post columnist – is Welsh and lives in Ruthin. A former Wales under-19 captain, who has since graduated to Brian Flynn’s U21 squad, he said: “Obviously I’m delighted, but it doesn’t change much in terms of what we need to do to win tomorrow night.

“I’m pleased that the gaffer regards me as someone who has a winning mentality, but I believe he has a lot of time for all the young players at the club.

“From a personal point of view I’ve been sick about losing so many games in the past year or so and I know a lot of the other lads feel the same way.

“Hopefully the gaffer’s arrival will herald a new era for the club and we saw some evidence of that at Forest Green on Saturday.

“We need to see more of that, especially at home in front of our own supporters and I’m really looking forward to the game.”
